  • 1 Dongshan Liangjie (洞山良价, 807–869) was a Chinese Chan master who founded the Caodong school (曹洞宗), one of the Five Houses of Chan.

His A Letter of Farewell to My Mother (射親書), which contains his resolve to part with his mother and enter monastic life, is such a literary masterpiece that it even appears in the monastic textbookChimun(緇門).

Monk Baegun, author of Jikji, must have been deeply moved by the text; he inserted the first and second part of this letter, as well as his mother’s response, into Jikji. Traditionally, people would quietly leave their home and join their monasteries, sending letters to their family afterwards. Often, they would derive their letters from this famous work, which starts with the following introduction:
There are no children without parents, nor are things without heaven and earth. Even Sakyamuni Buddhadepended on the body of his parents for his birth. Acknowledging such principles, I am fully aware that I am forever beholden to you for my birth in this world.
