CaoshanBenji(曹山本寂, 839–901) was a Chinese Chan master who, together with Chan Master Dongshan Liangjie (洞山良价), founded the Caodong school (曹洞宗), one of the Five Houses of Chan.He entered monastic life at the age of 19 and received full precepts at 25. Later, he changed his name to Caoshan (曹山), to reflect his admiration for Dajian Huineung (大鑒惠能), the Sixth Patriarch of Chan. The term Cadong (曹洞宗) is a portmanteau of Caoshan and Dongshan, names of the school’s two founders.

During the early years of the Xiantong era (860–874),Caoshan finally met Master Dongshan in person and became his Dharma heir.Later, he gave his Dharma talk on Mount Cao (曹山) in Fuzhou (撫州). His posthumous name is Yuanzheng (元證).

The Caoshan School of Buddhism was later transplanted to Japan. As of 2018, it is the largest school of Zen in the country. In the 1980s, the school began to be transplanted back to China.
