    Commentary
    Dongshan Liangjie (洞山良价, 807–869) was a Chinese Chan master of the Tang Dynasty and founder of the Caodong school (曹洞宗), one of the Five Houses of Chan.
    A son with a strong sense of filial piety, he nevertheless became a Buddhist monk. His A Letter of Farewell to My Mother (射親書), which he sent to his mother after undergoing ordination, is such a literary masterpiece that it even appears in the monastic textbookChimun (緇門).
    While staying on Mount Xinli (新豊山) in Guangdong and the Puli Monastery (普利院) on Mount Dong (洞山) in Jiangxi, he elaborated his own style of Chan Buddhism.
    He had 27 disciples, including YunjuDaoying (雲居道膺), CaoshanBenji (曹山本寂), ShushanGuangren (疎山匡仁). Later, along with his dharma heir CaoshanBenji, he became the founder of Caodong school (曹洞宗), one of the Five Houses of Chan. The Caoshan is a portmanteau of their names
