  • 1 Overall, printed sections and sections that were added using a writing brush show a significant difference in the intensity of blackness, a phenomenon presumably caused by uneven typesetting. Some characters missing during the typesetting were later added manually using red ink.

The original hanji (traditional Korean paper), used for the inner pages of Jikji (not the paper added during the late Joseon period for the cover) feature lengthwise paper grains, each with a width of some 2.4 cm.

    Commentary
HuiqinFojian (佛龕慧懃, 1059–1117) was a Chinese monk of the Song Dynasty and a disciple of Chan Master WuzuFayan (五祖法演).

Under Wuzu, there were three renowned Chan masters known as the Three Buddhas (三佛), one of whom was HuiqinFojian. According to the Arsenal of the Chan School (宗門武庫), Huiqin served as abbot of Taiping Temple (太平寺) in Shuzhou (舒州).

On one occasion, while giving a Dharma talk, Huiqin related stories of Chan Master Zhaozhou Congshen (趙州從諗) and Chan Master FayanWenyi (法眼文益). When asked about something that does not flow, Zhaozhou answered by talking about something that does, thereby ensuring the questioner achieved awakening. Similarly, when asked about something that does not move, Fayan answered by talking about something that does, once again allowing the questioner to come to an awakening.
  • 3 Here, the character 如 (yeo) was added using a writing brush, replacing the original character 茹 (yeo).
  • 4 Since more than 5,000 types were used for the typesetting process, every nook and cranny of Jikji is replete with typographical errors. Here, the original missing character 動 (dong) was manually added afterwards.
  • 5 The character 山 (san) was probably printed with a supplementary wooden type since there are no speckles around it.
