    Commentary
When Chan Master Gaotingjian (高停簡) saw Chan Master Deshan (德山) across the river, he hollered, with palms together in front of his chest.
    “How are you?”
In response, Master Deshan gestured at the other master with his fan in his hand. At this, MasterGaotingjian came to a sudden awakening, began to walk along the river and never turned his head back.
With some people, you feel as though you have met them previously, or that merely looking at their faces makes you feel good. When a seed of some greed sprouts in my mind, a greed of wanting to work more passionately and receive more attention, such greed gives rise to an “oops moment.” If I shackle myself with such desire, how can I escape from it under my own willpower? Sometimes my greed grows larger than my existence, exceeding all control. What can I do to achieve a complete awakening just by observing a greeting? When Seon Master Seongcheol told people to offer 3,000 prostrations if they wished to see him, it made them think that, once they completed the bows, they would no longer need to see him. Perhaps, this is what a meeting should be like. If I can meet my true self by looking within, I won’t need to take the trouble to find a great master and listen to a Dharma talk. (Jung Yeo-ul)
