Guifeng Zongmi (圭峯宗密, 780–841) was a Chinese Chan master of the Tang Dynasty. He was born in Xichong (西充縣), Guozhou (果州) on the first year of Jianzhong (780).
At 25, Zongmi entered monastic life when he met Daoyuan (道圓), whosometimes visited Suizhou (澻州) from India and was a lineage holder of the Southern Chan school (南頓禪) founded by Huineung (惠能), the Sixth Patriarch of Chan. In the third year of Yuanhe (808), he received full precepts from him and became his disciple.Whilestill a novice monk, Zongmi was invited to a memorial service and happened to read the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment.
After reading only two or three pages of the scripture, he could feel his mind and body becoming lighter and achieved awakening. For this reason, he later devoted himself to studying the sutra.
Later, he acquired a number of commentaries on the sutra and engaged in extensive study for many years. Zongmi promoted the Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment, arguing that it assumed the status of great scripture that encompasses the doctrines of the Three Treatise School, the Southern and Northern Chan Schools, and the Huayan School.
In the first year of Changqing (821), he withdrew to Caotang Temple (草堂寺)situated beneath Gui Peak (圭峯) on ZhongnanMountain (终南山) in Shaanxi Province to write books onBuddhismwhile advocatingfor the harmonization between Chan and doctrine. He died on January 6 in the first year ofHuichang (841).
