    Commentary
YangshanHuiji (仰山慧寂, 807–883) was a Chinese Chan master born in Shaozhou (韶州), Guangdong Province. His secular surname was Ye (葉) and his Buddhist name was Huiji (慧寂). He entered monastic life at the age of 17 and later became a Dharma heir of Chan Master GuishanLingyou (溈山靈祐). He was dubbed “Little Buddha” (小釋迦), a sobriquet reflecting his profound wisdom. Along with his master, he founded the Guiyang school, one of the Five Houses of Chan. Guiyang is the portmanteau of the two Chan masters’ names.
