    Commentary
The lively, unfettered light is splendid, yet it is hard to find. Its bright rays open people’s hearts, and it cannot be bought even with ten thousand liangof gold. Even if a thousand saints appear, they will all emerge from the light’s shadow. Awakening, or the cause of awakening, remains unobtainable even with ten thousand liang of gold and therefore cannot be borrowed or purchased no matter how much money is spent. It cannot be captured, so it cannot be rented, donated, or exchanged for something else.

Unlike capitalist thinking that relentlessly seeks possession, the life of awakening emphasizes human existence as it is. Here, the path to such existence must be self-taught. Although you may offer to pay a veritable fortune, even the Buddha cannot make such understanding happen for you.

Similarly, the cause of awakening is splendid like a shining light, and is so “lively and unfettered” that it will disappear immediately even if you do happen to find it – just like a star that flashes for an instance and then fades away. Even so, it is dearer and more precious than anything else, for it can give the peace and joy that no money can buy. (SeoMyeong-won)
