    Commentary
YinganTanhua(鷹菴曇華, 1103–1163), also known as TiantongTanhua (天童曇華), was a Chinese Chan master of the Southern Song Dynasty. At the age of 17, he entered monastic life at Donchan Temple (東禪寺). Later, he met Yuanwu Keqin (圓悟克勤) at Yunqi Temple (雲棲), and following his recommendation, sought teachings from Chan Master HuqiuShaolong(虎丘紹隆, 1077–1136) and became his disciple.

When Chan Master ChianJinyuan (此菴景元, 1094–1146) was an abbot at Lianyun Temple (連雲寺) in Chuzhou (處州), Yingan, who had been under Master Huqui at the time, visited the temple. Even though it was his first visit, the Chan master gave him a head seat (首座), soon followed by the status of an exemplary monk (入繩) and the Dharma seat (法床). Later, he stayed at a monastery on Mount Tiantong (天童山) in Qingyuan (慶元府), ZhejiangProvince, promoting his school of Buddhism. Along with DahuiZonggao (大慧宗杲), he was known as “Two Ambrosia Gates” (甘露門).YinganTanhua passed away in June of the first year of Longxing (1163).
