  • 1 The overall print quality of this page is relatively good. Small-sized types were used for the main text. The character 靈 (ryeong) appears twice on this page, both in small-sized iterations. Later, this character served a particularly crucial role in determining whether the same movable metal types were used for printing the book Commentaries on Jabidoryangchambeop (Repentance Ritual of the Great Compassion). A line was drawn with a writing brush in the outer margin near the bottom of the page. In some cases, different instances of the same character show different calligraphic styles, specifically 夲 (to) used in the 8th and 9th line as well as 本 (bon) in the 9th line.
  • 2 The character is not as dark as it was printed with a depressed type.
  • 3 Intrusion between strokes from two adjacent characters is evident. The third line, in particular, exhibits more cases of intrusion than other lines.
  • 4 Uneven typesetting has led to the poor print quality of the character’s lower portion.

    Commentary
    “My fellow head monks! I hope that you will be thoroughly enlightened and enriched by experience. It is difficult to return a king’s favor, Buddha’s grace, our parents’ and elders’ affections, and our benefactors’ mercy. If you are to repay such gratitude, you must reach the sea of prajna with sagacious eyes. This is the only way you will attain grace and meaning.

    Personality of Prajna 般若性品
    Prajna refers to the wisdom to penetrate into Dharma nature. This is aptly illustrated in the following remark of the Fifth Patriarch Hongren in Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch. “The greatest enlightenment is to understand that our nature is ‘neither arising nor perishing (不生不滅)’ from the path that we are on, and cannot contravene any principle. If one is true, all are true, and all boundaries are stable. The stable, consistent mind translates into your intrinsic nature. If this is the case, you have realized your true personality.”
