  • 1 LiangbaoZhigong(梁寶誌公, 418–514), who wrote a ten-hymn series entitled “In Praise of the Mahayana” (大乘讚頌), was a Chinese Chan master of the Southern Dynasties. His surname was Zhu (朱). He was born in the southern region of the Shaanxi Province and became a monk early on in life.

He had the gift of prophecy and was well-versed in poetry and writing. In particular, in admiration of his virtues, kings and emperors granted him epithets, and they considered it a great honor.

Zhigong’s fame at the time even reached the Goguryeo Kingdom in Korea. Records on him appear in several books, including Biographies of Great Buddhists Since the Birth of Sakyamuni Buddha (佛祖歷代通載), Liang Biographies of Eminent Monks (梁高僧傳), Gazetteer of Mount Putuo (普陀山志), Gazetteer of Mount Baohua (寶華山), and Biographies of Divine Monks (神僧傳). In particular, depictions of him inthe Biographies of Divine Monks, which contains records on mysterious monks, offer glimpses into his trajectory as an accomplished Chan practitioner.

He left a number of writings, including the 30 volumes ofExplanations on Words and Letters (文字釋訓), 14 poems of “Verses on Fourteen Themes” (十四科頌),” 12 poems of“Verses on the Twelve Hours” (十二時頌) and ten poems of “In Praise of the Mahayana” (大乘讚頌).In particular, “In Praise of the Mahayana” is said to have been dedicated to an emperor of one of the Northern and Southern Dynasties.

“In Praise of the Mahayana” (大乘讚頌 or commonly referred to as 大乘讚), a series of short poems depicting the essence of Buddhist life, is literally a song of praise for a life spent practicing Mahayana Buddhism. Along with “Inscriptions of Faith in Mind” (信心銘) and “Song of Realizing the Way” (證道歌), the verse is considered among the three greatest Chan poems.
