  • 1 Here, the two small-sized characters gyeong (更) and bu (不) are printed horizontally. They were probably added afterwards, when artisans realized, after already completing the typesetting, that the two characters were missing.
  • 2 Here, the characters are not as dark as adjacent ones as their types were placed lower during the typesetting. This phenomenon showcases one distinct characteristic of movable metal type printing.

    Commentary
Zen Master Shibei stood up to the preaching seat and, after hearing the sound of swallows, said,
“What a deep discussion of the true nature of reality, and a succinct lecture on the core tenets of Buddhist teachings.”

Then he came down from the seat. Source: The Mysterious and Interesting Story of Jikji, Taehak Publisher

    Commentary
Zen Master Xuefeng Yicun (雪峰義存, 822-908) asked the monk Shibei,
“Why don’t you leave the temple to go on pilgrimage?”
    “I will do that.”
After leaving the temple to obey his master, Shibei stubbed his toes while walking along a path. He groaned in pain and said,
“This place is as void as any other place. I do not even own my body, and yet where does this pain come from? Alas, Bodhidharma did not come to the East (China), and Dazu Huike did not go to the West (India).”
After returning to Xuefeng Temple, Shibei never went outside of the temple again. Source: The Mysterious and Interesting Story of Jikji, Taehak Publisher

    Commentary
There is an anecdote about Zen Master Fayan Wenyi (法眼文益).
The monk Decang (地藏) asked Fayan,
“Where are you planning to go on pilgrimage?”
“I plan to just roam around here and there.”
    “What does a pilgrimage mean?”
    “I don’t know.”
    "That is the best answer."
Fayan found great enlightenment in Decang’s words.
